Building renovation in Ano Petralona, Athens

This project involves the complete renovation and reconfiguration of an existing two-storey building in Ano Petralona, Athens.

The design brief focused on the transformation of the upper floors into short-stay residential apartments, while the ground floor was redesigned to accommodate an architectural studio and art space.

The concept for the short-stay units was based on the creation of warm and intimate interiors, drawing aesthetic references from traditional Greek domestic architecture. In contrast, the architectural studio was conceived as a welcoming and inspiring workspace, emphasizing natural light, greenery, and a sense of openness to support creativity and everyday use.

A key component of the project was the redesign of the building’s main façade. The compositional approach centered on the clarification of forms and the clear tripartite articulation of the elevation into base, body, and crown. Given the building’s location within the historic center of Athens, particular emphasis was placed on the chromatic study. A color palette inspired by terra cotta tones was selected, while the use of ceramic claustra plays a significant role in shaping the façade’s identity, contributing to both its architectural expression and environmental performance.
