BETWEEN ART & ARCHITECTURE

Natalia Kesente is an architect, artist, and designer whose practice moves between architecture, ceramics, printmaking, and contemporary craft. Her work explores the relationship among materiality, memory, and space, connecting architectural thinking with handmade artistic processes.

Trained as an architect, she gradually expanded her practice beyond the scale of buildings, developing a more tactile and intimate artistic language. Through ceramics, embroidery, printmaking and object-making, she investigates themes of Mediterranean identity, everyday rituals, storytelling and the emotional traces embedded in materials and ordinary objects.

Her ceramics, printworks and embroideries draw inspiration from Greek folk traditions, handcrafted techniques, and memories and images shaped by the dynamics of everyday life and lived experience. Her ceramic works, including sculptural vessels, decorative tiles and handmade objects, combine organic forms, rhythmic patterns and richly textured surfaces inspired by Greek ceramic traditions, vernacular architecture and the landscape of Lesvos, especially the village of Eressos, where she spent her childhood summers. Human figures, plants, seascapes and abstract motifs frequently reappear throughout her work, forming a visual language that feels both playful and deeply personal.

Each piece is handmade and carries an immediate gestural quality, where expression, materiality and care remain central to the creative process.

Alongside her personal artistic practice, she is the co-founder of Heterotopians, a collective of architects, artists, and designers based in Athens and united by a shared vision: to rethink the way we inhabit and perceive space. Inspired by Michel Foucault’s concept of “heterotopia,” Heterotopians approach art and architecture not as separate disciplines but as interconnected practices capable of reintegrating creativity into everyday life. The studio maintains a creative workspace in Athens, where ceramic classes and artistic workshops also take place.

In recent years, she has been living and working in Germany, in the picturesque Rhineland-Palatinate region, where new landscapes, atmospheres, and everyday experiences have gradually begun to influence her artistic practice. The coexistence of Mediterranean memory with the new realities of life in Germany creates an ongoing dialogue among places, materials, and cultural references, continuously expanding her visual language.

Through spaces, objects, and artistic interventions, she seeks to create experiences that function not only aesthetically but also emotionally and experientially, works that integrate organically into everyday life, provoke dialogue, and reconsider the relationship between people and their environment.

Natalia approaches architecture not only as the design of buildings but also as a broader cultural practice that connects people, objects, spaces, and collective memory. Her work exists at the intersection of art, craft, and spatial storytelling, with a strong interest in collaborating with galleries, cultural institutions, and interdisciplinary creative environments.
