Stone Guest Houses and Barn in Provarma, Kimolos, Greece
“An understated architectural intervention in Provarma, Kimolos, blending Cycladic craftsmanship with contemporary living in perfect harmony with the terrain.”
This project introduces a composition of four stone guesthouses alongside the restoration of an existing barn in Provarma, Kimolos. The design engages directly with the island’s natural contours and cultural context, ensuring a discreet presence within the landscape.
The buildings are strategically positioned to follow the terrain’s natural slope, with fragmented volumes that align with traditional Cycladic proportions, avoiding extended continuous façades. Each structure is crafted with uncoated local stone, utilizing a double-wall technique for enhanced performance and longevity.
The ensemble includes two clusters of split-level guesthouses and the sensitive adaptation of a mid-20th century barn. Architectural interventions on the existing structure are kept restrained, preserving its historic character.
Materiality, structural clarity, and siting emphasize environmental harmony, abundant natural light, and uninterrupted views of the Aegean Sea, offering a contemporary yet grounded interpretation of Cycladic vernacular forms.
